Posted on February 24, 2021 in training offered

You may already be well aware of the numerous benefits of regular exercise, such as developing strength and improving physical fitness. Several studies have also shown the specific effects of different exercises. For instance, jogging can increase life expectancy, while yoga promotes serotonin production. However, there is one activity that some people fail to consider when it comes to effectively enhancing physical and mental health — martial arts, such as boxing and Muay Thai. A Muay Thai boxing gym in San Diego shares a few brain-boosting reasons to take up these arts.

Martial Arts

Reduced Aggression

In a 2008 study, children aged 8-11 were tasked with traditional martial arts training that emphasized self-defense and respect for other people as part of an anti-bullying program. The researchers concluded that the level of aggression in male participants significantly reduced. Similar research also found reduced physical and verbal aggression in adolescents who practiced martial arts.

Improved Attention

It has been suggested that martial arts is a form of attention state training (AST) — a technique that improves attention and promotes stronger focus by getting into a specific state of mind. A recent study has also shown a link between practice and improved alertness. This proposes that practicing martial arts can improve your performance on multiple tasks that require simultaneous attention.

If you are having trouble with concentration, enrolling in a physical fitness program can benefit you greatly.

3. Enhanced Emotional Well-Being

In a 2013 study, adults aged 67-93 were asked to participate in cognitive training, karate training and non-martial arts training. After the training period of three to six months, the older participants showed lower levels of depression than other age groups, possibly due to its meditative function. These adults also showed a greater level of self-esteem after completing the training programs.
